Hello children! You have a book report due on the 21st of February. The report will be based on how much of your independent book you have read so far. For those of you who are confused, remember how we read independent books every Wednesday? Your book report will be based on the chapters of that book that you will have finished reading by February 16th. The general outline and format are attached here. However, please remember that you have to organize the format into paragraphs. You may not submit the report in a point form. Please let me know if you have any questions. Happy studying! Ms.S
Hello everyone,
This is an important message about university applications. The deadline for many universities is THIS MONDAY, that's the 15th of January. Please check the websites for the universities you are interested in attending. If the deadline is not this Monday, you're fine. If it is this Monday, please get your applications in RIGHT AWAY, BEFORE MONDAY. You can always send them the documents later. If you need help, please see our wonderful counsellor, Ms.Ahmad. Have a wonderful weekend! Ms.S We can't save the world, but we can try and use less paper.
We can also be more informed. Let's work together as a class to make this happen! Ms.S Hello class, For those of you who weren't here, part of this class involves a book club. I will be running it every Wednesday throughout this semester. All you have to do is pick any book you like, and read it over this semester. As you're reading it, use the discussion guide I've posted here and ask yourselves the questions provided. At the end of the semester, you and I will be having a one on one discussion about your book, and that discussion will be graded and will form part of your final score for my class. Here is a pdf of the Discussion Guide for our Book Club. If you feel like the questions are not applicable to your book, feel free to talk to me or choose another one. Let me know if you have any questions. Happy Reading! Ms.S
Hello everyone!
Welcome to your first semester of 2018! I'm sure we will have a great time together. Happy learning! Ms.S Hello class!
This is just a quick reminder that your finals are on the 11th of December. That's a Monday. The exam starts at 10:25, and will consist of multiple choice questions with a short essay at the end. This exam will be worth 25% of your final grade. Please let me know if you have any questions. Good luck! Ms.S Hello class!
As you know, I won't be here tomorrow, so here is the class work you have to finish. Be good! 1. How do you communicate with your parents? (open/closed). Give details and examples. 2. Are there any rules that your parents expect you to follow? What are they? 3. What are the consequences for improper behaviour or breaking rules? 4. Have your parents ever disapproved of anything you did? 5. If you could change something about your relationship with your parents, what would it be? After you're done with this, please combine these answers with Monday's responses to form an essay! In case you need a reminder, here are the points we wrote down on Monday: a) Give an example of one activity or event that best describes you b)Compare that to your friend's event or activity c) Give examples of slang, music, and TV that you like/listen to/see in your life. While combining these two, the first part of your essay should focus on your life as a teenager, and the second should be about what kind of relationship you have with your parents. The main idea is that I want to know how you see yourself, and how your parents see you. Please give your essay a title, and make sure it is at least 300-400 words long. Let me know if you have any questions. I will be collecting your work on Thursday. Happy writing! Ms.S Hello Communications and Composition 11 students! Here is what you have to do if you want extra credit: 1. Pick a book or a short story 2. Write a 300-500 word essay on it, which should include the following: a) Why you picked the book/short story b) What genre it belongs to and a background/analysis of the genre c) A summary of the book/short story. d) An analysis of the main characters e) Compare and contrast (you can compare and contrast two books from the same series, for example, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, or The Hunger Games 1 and 2). f) Why you think this book/short story is important culturally, socially, or historically. Please let me know if you have any questions. If you do want extra credit, please hand in the essay next Wednesday. I'll be using the rubric attached here to grade your work. Happy thinking! Ms.S
Hello everyone!
Here is a copy of the pdf and video for the graphic novel we discussed in class today. It's called The Arrival, by Shaun Tan. As we take a look at this novel, I want you to imagine the story that the author is trying to tell with the pictures. In groups, please write down what story you think the author is trying to tell. After you have done that, we can think about how the following elements affect the story: 1. Storyboard design 2. Colours 3. Different angles and perspectives 4. Images such as a suitcase, parcel, hat, and coat. 5. Shadows and empty streets 6. What visual features support or challenge stereotypes? We will discuss this in further detail of course, but here are the links to begin with: Video: https://vimeo.com/74292820 Scribd/pdf: https://www.scribd.com/doc/146642021/Shaun-Tan-The-Arrival Happy thinking!
