Hello Tom haters!
Today we started chapter 6, where we learn of Gatsby's history before becoming a successful member of high society in New York. We learn that he was a man who liked to dissociate from his parents, engaged in loafing along the coast and socializing with many, many women who frustrated him. That's pure happiness right there. (Only kidding, please do not reproduce that statement in your essays). Also, this is a reminder to hand in your setting maps, for check 1. I will be checking your setting map one more time during this unit and I will let you know in advance when that is. We will be continuing with chapter 6 tomorrow. Also, please update your journals before the weekly check on Friday, and please decide what presentations you will be doing. Let me know before this Friday. Happy writing, and hopefully the sun will come out tomorrow. Ms.S

Hello Gatsby lovers! Today we witnessed two epic scenes from the book, the first one being Gatsby and Daisy's romance. We learn that Daisy and Gatsby were involved, but Gatsby went off to war and left Daisy waiting, which resulted in Daisy's heart being broken. She gets a letter from him on her wedding day, but is forced to marry Tom Buchanan anyway, who turns out to be unfaithful to her shortly after their wedding. We also see that Gatsby wants to meet Daisy and asks Nick to invite her to his (Nick's) house, which is where the highly entertaining event of Gatsby breaking the mantelpiece clock occurs. Here is the video we watched in class today: Also, for today's homework, please finish reading chapter 5 and do your journal entries.
I would also like to remind you to fill in your setting maps as you are reading the novel. This will make it easier for you to understand the novel, and you won't have to do all your work in a hurry. I will be checking your setting maps this week. The handout I gave you says that I will be checking your setting maps tomorrow. I will give you time in class to finish working on it. All you have to do is fill out descriptions of the places we have read about in the book. By the end of class tomorrow you should have filled out the following entries in your setting maps: 1. Nick's house (chapter 1, chapter 5) 2. Tom and Myrtle's apartment (chapter 2) 3. Valley of Ashes (chapter 2) 4. West Egg (chapter 1) 5. Wilson's garage (chapter 2) 6. T.J Eckleburg's billboard (chapter 2) I would also like to remind you that I will be grading your journal as part of your midterms. There will be no test for the midterms. I will announce the date on which I will be doing this, but if you want a good grade you should channel all your effort into making your journal a well written and creative one. Please see the handout I gave you. If you follow the guidelines, you are sure to get a good grade on your midterms. Happy reading, and don't break mantelpiece clocks! Ms.S Hello everyone! First things first, let's talk about today's homework. We started reading Chapter 3 and stopped on page 69. For homework, please read page 69-74. For your journals, you should have the following entries: 1. One entry for chapter 3 that you read over the weekend 2. One for the section we read in class today 3. One for the homework pages. You may combine 2 and 3 if you like, but you should have the journal entries for these pages in your book. Next, let's talk about presentations. As we discussed, presentations will account for 25% of your grade for The Great Gatsby. Here are the topics. You may pick any of the following, and may present in groups if you wish. However, groups cannot exceed 3 members. Please post your group and your group members in the comments for this post, and let me know which topic you would like to present on. 1. The roaring 20s 2. The class computer isn't working today, so you may have to use your computers or phones to watch today's video. When I ask you to turn on your devices and watch the videos, please do so quietly and in an orderly manner. Here is the video we're going to watch today. Nick meets Gatsby for the first time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBdoyPY1ELo Happy watching! Ms.S Hello readers!
I would just like to confirm which of you have copies of the book, and which of you don't. Please leave a comment on this post with the following information: 1. Your name 2. If you have a copy of the book (just say yes or no) 3. the ISBN number of the book (the number on the inside) Also, for this weekend's reading assignment, please read Chapter 3 for Monday. I have asked one of your classmates to pass on the message as well in case you don't check the class website (which you should do regularly anyway :) ). Happy Reading! Ms.S Hello readers! Today we continued with chapter 1 and encountered a really important event; Tom and Daisy's fight. (page 15-16). We find out that Tom has "some woman in New York" (page 15) , and Daisy knows about it. However, she doesn't tell Nick that she knows. In this chapter we also see that Tom is an abusive man and probably beats Daisy. This is even more concerning because of the fact that Daisy is represented as being pure and innocent. She always wears white clothes, and has expensive jewelry which may be her way of staying happy in an unhappy, unsuccessful marriage. The Prezi from today is attached here. It has important character maps and analyses, so definitely save this so you have notes for assignments and quizzes later. I have also included the Youtube links to the introductory part of The Great Gatsby, as well as the scene where Nick meets Daisy. Also, just a reminder that you have to read the pages you and your partner(s) were assigned today. For the journals, you should have yesterday's entry, today's entry about what we wrote or watched, and the final journal for the week which will be done tomorrow. (three in total for this week). For tomorrow's journal entry you only have to write about the pages that your group read. So for example, Sally, Linh and Steven were assigned pages 26, 27, and 28. They will read those pages today, and then present the main points of their section to the entire class. Then, for their journal entry tomorrow, they will write about pages 26, 27, and 28. Here is the list of the groups and their assigned pages 1. Alvin and Zack- 16, 17, 18 2. Sandra and Ayako- 19, 20, 21 3. Mingzeng, Jerry, and Al- 23, 24, 25 4. Sally, Linh, and Stephen- 26, 27, 28 5. Jorge and Hallen- 29, 30, 31 6. Alireza and Oliver- 32,33, 34 Please bring your journals to class. I will give you time to finish your work in class, and at the end of class tomorrow I will be collecting your journals. If you want to type out your journals and email them to me that is perfectly fine. My contact information is on the contact page of this website, but just in case you didn't or can't access it, you can email me at [email protected] Here are the links for the resources from today's class: Presentation about the characters https://prezi.com/pzjwkkxuiowp/the-great-gatsby-characters/ Movie with introductory section (1974 version) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B86ixiypBeE&t=86s Nick meets Daisy (2013 movie) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_WONtJ3GVQ Happy reading! Ms.S Hello grade 12s! Here are the main points from our reading of the Great Gatsby today: 1. Nick is the narrator and one of the main characters. He has returned from World War I and wants to start a business specializing in bonds, and gets financial help from his father. 2. Nick moves to East Egg in New York 3. The book does not have a fixed sense of time and often switches between past, present, and future. This style of writing is called Modernism. Homework for today (Oh no!) 1. Please read from page 5-11. Stop on page 11 when you get to the line "Gatsby? What Gatsby?" 2. At home, please fill in your daily journals. The journals could be about what we read in class, or what you read at home. I would encourage you to write in your journal as soon as you have read a particular section, because that way it will stay fresh in your mind and you will have less homework to do. :) I will also give you some class time to do your journals, especially on Wednesdays. The sample journal and guidelines are on the handout, but I will attach them here just in case you didn't get it or were absent. 3. Please look at the Setting Map and familiarize yourself with it. We are going to be writing descriptions of different places in the novel, and this will help you when we work on other assignments in this unit. Also, I noticed that one page of the Setting Map did not get printed, and I will hand those out to you tomorrow. I will attach the handout and rubric for the setting map as well so you have easy access to it. Enjoy! See you next class. Ms.S
Hello everyone!
As a reminder, here are the class expectations we talked about today. I will add your suggestions to this list and post the final copy in the classroom. Remember, if you want your classmates to respect you, you should also respect them! Also, I welcome any questions or comments, and I especially encourage opinions from you all! I look forward to working and learning with all of you. Ms.S |
