Here is the article we will be reading in class today. http://www.nytimes.com/learning/teachers/featured_articles/20050520friday.html This piece focuses on how it can be uncomfortable to move from one social class to another. How does this relate to the book? Enjoy! Ms.S

Today, we examined a few different conceptualizations of the American Dream. We did this by reading articles from The New York Times, and organizing our thoughts into a neat little thought organizer. Here are the articles from today's class in case you need them later or want to use them for presentations or essays. The articles as well as the thought organizer have been attached to this post. Enjoy! Ms.S
Hello everyone!
I'm reposting the videos you were supposed to watch over the weekend, since there seems to have been some problem with finding the files. This is the first video we watched in class. If you youtube 'Myrtle's party scene (2013)', you should be able to view the other video we watched in class. For censorship reasons I cannot repost that video here. All you have to do is compare Myrtle in the book to Myrtle in the movie. You may email me your response, or submit it in writing. Happy thinking! Ms.S Hello class! Let's do a quick recap. Today we started reading the novel, and we came across many interesting details about our protagonist Nick, including the following: 1. His family is from Minnesota and they still live there 2. Nick participated in The Great War (World War I) 3. After the war, he decided to become a bond salesman and move to New York 4. Nick lives in West Egg, across the bay from Daisy and Tom, who live in East Egg. 5. Daisy and Tom come from old money, and Tom played football at New Haven College in Yale, where Nick also graduated from. 6. Tom is having an affair with someone Here are some important things to remember: One of the central questions of the book is: Does Nick judge Gatsby? Why, or why not? Daisy is wearing an all white outfit when she first meets Nick, and the entire room is covered in white. What does this signify about Daisy? Now that we've covered the recap, let's move on to the homework (for Period 4) 1. You should have finished writing in your journals for page 1-6 of the book. Get it checked by me either today or tomorrow so that you can continue your journal with my comments. 2. Read page 7, 8, and 9 for homework. 3. Tomorrow, we are going to be discussing Tom's character, and I want you to come up with a character profile for him. This means I want you to think about his personality, his appearance, and what you learn about him based on what he says and his actions. I have also attached an e-copy of the book here for anyone who wants to read at home. Happy reading! Ms.S
Hello English 12 students! Here is a copy of the presentation we engaged with today. It has all the background information you need to know, including a breakdown of the characters. Please let me know if you have any questions. We will start reading the novel tomorrow. I'm also including a copy of the journal guidelines and Setting Map. Also, please hand in your Freytag's Pyramid homework if you haven't already. I will deduct 10 points for late submissions. Happy reading! Ms.S
Hello everyone! Here is a recap of what we did today, plus the homework that is due on Monday. Today, we discussed and reviewed Freytag's Pyramid, which is a great organizer for analyzing short stories and novels. I have attached a copy of the handout here. For homework, you will have to finish filling out the answers for the story with Ella Montgomery, which is right after the Shrek activity. You will also have to choose any story you want, and fill out the answers and organize it on the Freytag's Pyramid on the last page. Please email me or see me if you have any questions about the homework, or if you didn't understand something. I would also like to remind you all to bring your journals on Monday, as we will be starting The Great Gatsby. I will explain how to write and submit your journals then. Have a great weekend! Ms.S
