Here is the long awaited post on Dante's Sonnet. It is important to remember that Dante was trying to vitalize Italian as an accepted language for poetry and literature, because at the time, the de facto language preferred by the elitists was Latin. As all of you know, Dante devoted many of his poems to Lady Beatrice Portinari. He first met her when she was nine (creepy, I know), and claimed to have fallen in love with her at first sight. He only started seeing her when she was 18 (thankfully), and remained enamoured with her until his death. They were both married to other people, and never did establish a formal relationship. Dante's love for Beatrice inspired most of his poems, and, coupled with the themes of divinity, retribution, purging, and purity, he developed a new style he called dolce stil novo, or sweet new style. This manner of writing was based on the idea of courtly love found in old French poetry. This sonnet has elements of dolce stil novo. As an experiment, read the sonnet again and try to figure out how it could be related to Dante's new style! The rhyme scheme is abbaabbacdcdcd. Just a couple of other things to keep in mind: This poem is from a larger work called Vita Nuova , or new life. Vita Nuova is a prosimetrum, or a work in which prose alternates with poetry. Most poems in this text are sonnets, although there are three large songs, or canzoni. Please let me know if you have any questions. Happy reading! Ms.S Hello everyone! Here is a quick recap of Visions, by Francesco Petrarch. Visions is part of a larger work called Canzioniere, which means song book in Italian. This consists of 366 poems, all composed about Laura, a married woman and the object of Petrarch's affections. The first half of Canzioniere focuses on Laura in life, and how she makes Petrarch feel. The second half focus on Laura in death, and ends with her ascension to heaven. The sonnets are mostly in the abbaabba cde cde rhyme scheme, and written in iambic pentameter. Petrarch also created a device he called topos, meaning recurring poetic formula. This refers to reappearing literary techniques he used in his poem, a famous one being the poet speaking from a door or window, which we see at the very beginning of Visions. For more detailed notes, please see the file attached here. Be good tomorrow! Ms.S
Hello class! As you know, I won't be here tomorrow, but don't feel too bad. Here is what you need to finish by the end of class tomorrow: 1. Research a Petrarchan sonnet 2. Mark the rhyme scheme 3. Pick out the figurative language in the sonnet 4. Research the background and influences of the sonnet 5. Research the poet and write a short bio. The entire response should be at least one page, double spaced. That works out to about 300 words. If you do not finish, please do it for homework since I will be collecting it on Thursday. I've also attached the Petrarchan sonnets we've discussed in class. Don't cry for me, I'll be back soon! Happy researching! Ms.S
