Hello essay writers!
As some of you may have noticed, I have put up two story maps of the novel in class. This will help you remember a clear outline of the story and the events in a organized (and fun) way. Here's a copy if you want one. Happy reading! Ms.S Hello chasers of green light! This is just an announcement / reminder about your Midterms. It will be an in class essay. We are going to be starting the midterm essay on Thursday in class. I will be collecting your work at the end of class, and handing it back the next day. You may then finish the essay in class. This means the midterm will be spread over two days and you will have plenty of time to finish. We will have a practice exam before the actual assignment. This will be on Wednesday. Here are the rules you should keep in mind: 1. Your essay must have a clear title. Try and have fun with it! 2. There should be a clear topic sentence 3. The essay should be organized into three clear and separate paragraphs: an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. 4. It can be an expository, reflective, persuasive, or narrative essay. 5. If you need some facts or information to add to your essay you may bring notes, or a book. Please do not use the internet while doing the assignment. 6. The essay should be 800-1000 words. That would work out to two sides. Here are some suggestions for your essay topics: 1. The American Dream and how it is portrayed in the novel or how it relates to the novel. 2. Flapper culture or women's rights in the 1920s. Give some instances or examples from the novel. 3. Symbolism in the novel 4. World War I and how it relates to the novel 5. F. Scott Fitzgerald's life and how it relates to the novel 6. Character sketches or analyses of the main characters 7. The importance of setting in the novel 8. The Roaring 20s 9. Is what Gatsby feels for Daisy love, obsession, affection, or objectification? What is Fitzgerald's message here? Can Gatsby actually feel love or is he just obsessed with controlling everything? 10. Discuss the novel's theme that outward appearances can be deceptive. 11. Compare and contrast the homes of the characters (Nick's house, Gatsby's house, Daisy's house, or Tom and Myrtle's apartment). How does each home relate to each character, or how is each home a symbol for its character? 12. Who is the most admirable character? OR Who is the most despicable or hated character? 13. Trace the use of the colour green in the novel. What does is symbolize? What does it symbolism to Gatsby? What does it symbolize to Nick? 14. Trace the use of the colour white in the novel. What does it symbolize? 15. How does Fitzgerald juxtapose different regions of America in the novel? Does he portray the midwest better, or does he describe East Egg in a more positive way? 16. What is the difference between West Egg and East Egg? How does one bridge the gap between the two? 17. In what ways are Wilson and Gatsby similar or dissimilar? Who is Nick more sympathetic to? 18. Who is more responsible for Gatsby's death? Is it Tom? Myrtle? Daisy? Gatsby himself? Give reasons why each character may be responsible for Gatsby's death. 19. Is Nick a reliable or a trustworthy narrator? How does his point of view affect the story? 20. Analyze Gatsby's relationship with Daisy. 21. What is the most essential symbol in the novel? What does it represent? 22. Why do Daisy and Tom stay together? 23. Does Gatsby's money bring him happiness? 24. What traits does Nick find admirable about Gatsby? What does Nick dislike about Gatsby? 25. How does Fitzgerald use weather in the novel? 26. How do you know that Gatsby likes to control everything? Give some examples from the book. 27. Bootlegging. One important thing for you all to consider is knowing how I will be grading the midterms. Here is the rubric I will be using. I recommend printing out a copy and having it with you so you know exactly how you can improve your work and get a good score. Happy working, and good luck! Ms.S
Hello everyone!
